State Tourism Department seeks more self-funding

One of the many matters worth tracking during the coming 2018 session of the Legislature is SB 59 that would allow the state Department of Tourism to more readily sell advertising at South Dakota’s tourist-information centers along I-29 and I-90.

The proceeds would be dedicated to funding exhibits at the centers. The measure comes from the department and has been assigned to the Senate Transportation Committee chaired by Sen. Ernie Otten, R-Tea.

The Daugaard administration has made interstate rest areas a focus for the state Department of Transportation. The legislation specifies the advertising in the centers couldn’t be seen by traffic passing on the interstates.
